ResMed AirCurve 10 VAuto

The AirCurve 10 VAuto is ResMed's previous-generation auto-adjusting bilevel machine, launched with the AirCurve 10 series in December 2014. It shares the AirSense 10 body, dial controls and HumidAir humidifier, and works from 3 to 25 cm H2O in bilevel modes. The fixed-pressure AirCurve 10 S (and the AirCurve 10 ST, which adds a backup rate) use the same guide and menus; the AirCurve 11 VAuto replaced it as ResMed's current model in the US in 2024.

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Bilevel pressure, with a lower exhale pressure, up to 25 cm H2O
  • Dial and buttons work without a touch screen
  • SD card comes already inserted, so detailed data is recorded from the first night
  • Leak Alert can wake you if the mask comes off, if your provider enables it
  • Uses the same tubing, filters and tubs as the AirSense 10, which are widely stocked
  • Power supply accepts 100 to 240 V for travel

Trade-offs

  • No Auto ramp: Ramp Time is Off or 5 to 45 minutes only
  • Heavier and taller than the AirCurve 11 (44 oz and 4.57 in versus 43 oz and 3.72 in)
  • The 2014 US guide caps supplemental oxygen at 4 L/min in VAuto mode, versus 15 L/min in S, ST, T and CPAP modes
  • Older units use a CDMA cellular module, so wireless reporting depends on that network

Cleaning and care

  1. Every day: empty the tub

Let the tub cool for ten minutes, then remove it and discard the leftover water. Let it dry and refill with fresh distilled water at bedtime.

  2. Every week: wash tub and tubing

Unplug the machine. Wash the tub and tubing in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse thoroughly and let them dry out of direct sunlight and heat. Wipe the outside of the machine with a dry cloth.

The 2014 US guide says not to wash them in a dishwasher or washing machine.

  3. What not to use

Do not use bleach, chlorine, alcohol, aromatic-based solutions, moisturizing or antibacterial soaps or scented oils on the machine, tub or tubing.

  4. Mineral deposits and wear

Remove white powder in the tub with 1 part household vinegar to 10 parts water and rinse. Replace the tub if it leaks, cracks, turns cloudy or pitted, or its seal is torn, and replace tubing with holes, tears or cracks.

  5. Air filter

Replace the filter at least every six months, sooner if it has holes or is blocked. It is not washable. Open the cover, swap the filter and close it; keep a filter fitted at all times.

  6. Tub seal and lid

If the seal comes out, place it in the lid and press along all edges. If the lid comes off, put one side into the pivot hole and slide the other side down until it clicks.

Replacement parts

Tubing
ClimateLineAir heated tubing (ResMed part 37296, 6 ft 6 in), SlimLine or Standard non-heated tubing.
Filters
Air10 standard or hypoallergenic disposable filters (the same Air10 filter types listed for the AirSense 10). Not washable.
Water chamber
HumidAir standard water tub or cleanable water tub (the Air10 tubs). Air11 tubs do not fit.
Replacement notes
ResMed's guide says to replace the filter at least every six months and gives a design life of 6 months for the standard tub and tubing and 2.5 years for the cleanable tub. Medicare's PAP policy (LCD L33718) lists these usual maximum quantities: non-heated tubing (A7037) or heated tubing (A4604) 1 per 3 months, disposable filters (A7038) 2 per month, non-disposable filters (A7039) 1 per 6 months, and the humidifier water chamber (A7046) 1 per 6 months. These are the most Medicare usually pays for, not a rule that parts last that long; private insurers set their own schedules, so check with your plan and your equipment supplier.

Troubleshooting

Air leaking around the mask

Refit the mask and run Mask Fit in My Options until you get a Good result. Bilevel pressures up to 25 cm H2O make fit more important; ask your supplier about a different size if you cannot seal it.

Too much air when you lie down

Ramp may be off; turn on Ramp Time in My Options. Do not change your prescribed pressures yourself.

Not enough air at the start

Ramp may be in progress; wait for it to build or turn Ramp Time off. Ask your clinician if it feels low all night.

Dry or blocked nose

Raise Humidity Level, or use ClimateLineAir heated tubing with Climate Control.

Water droplets in mask or tubing

Lower Humidity Level and keep the machine lower than your head; heated tubing or a tubing cover helps in a cold room.

Very dry mouth

Air is probably escaping through your mouth. Raise humidity and ask your supplier about a chin strap or full face mask.

Still blowing air after you stop

That is the cool-down to prevent condensation; it stops by itself after 20 minutes.

Screen and buttons flashing

A software upgrade is in progress and takes about 10 minutes. Leave it plugged in.

Data not reaching your provider

Keep it plugged in on the nightstand, not on the floor, with Airplane Mode off. If there is no wireless network, your provider may ask you to mail the SD card, which also stores your data.

Travel and power

ResMed states the AirCurve 10 meets FAA requirements for all phases of air travel; it can go in the cabin as a medical device that does not count toward your carry-on limit, and compliance letters can be printed from resmed.com. Empty the tub and pack it separately. On the plane, the empty tub must be inserted for the machine to run, and you should turn on Airplane Mode in My Options. Never use it with water in the tub during the flight.

The 90W power supply handles 100 to 240 V at 50 to 60 Hz. ResMed lists an Air10 DC/DC converter for DC power. If you use an external battery, ResMed's guide says to set Humidity Level to Off to maximize battery life; check with the battery maker that it supports the AirCurve 10 at bilevel pressures.

Your sleep data

Each morning the Sleep Report shows usage hours, mask seal and humidifier status, plus events per hour if your provider turns it on. Cellular units send data to your care provider after therapy stops, and work with myAir; ResMed says myAir is not currently available on AirCurve 10 Card-to-Cloud machines.

The AirCurve 10 ships with its SD card already inserted, which records your data whether or not the cellular link works. Do not remove it while the SD light is flashing. The free OSCAR program reads ResMed SD card data if you copy it to a computer. Use it to understand your nights and bring questions to your clinician, who decides any pressure changes.

Supplies that can help

Distilled water for CPAP humidifiers

Distilled water is what most CPAP humidifier chambers are meant to be filled with, because it leaves little or no mineral scale behind.

Replacement CPAP air filters

The air inlet filter keeps dust and lint out of the machine and your airway; it is a cheap part that needs regular replacement.

Heated CPAP tubing

Tubing with a built-in heating wire that keeps humidified air warm all the way to the mask, which is the main fix for rainout (water droplets …

Standard (unheated) CPAP tubing

The plain hose between the machine and the mask; it wears out and should be replaced on a regular schedule.

Humidifier water chamber (tub)

The removable water tank of a CPAP humidifier; it wears and needs replacing, especially if it cracks, clouds or leaks.

CPAP chinstrap

A soft strap that supports the jaw to help keep the mouth closed, used mainly with nasal and nasal pillow masks to reduce mouth leaks.

CPAP tubing cover

A fabric sleeve that slips over CPAP tubing to insulate it, reduce condensation and make the hose feel softer against your skin.

CPAP DC power cord or converter

A cord or converter that runs a CPAP from a 12 V or 24 V DC source, such as a car outlet, RV or deep cycle …

CPAP battery

A battery pack that runs a CPAP machine without mains power, for camping, power outages or long flights.

Mild unscented soap for CPAP cleaning

Plain, mild dish soap is the cleaning agent most CPAP makers and the FDA point to for masks, tubing and humidifier chambers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the AirCurve 10 VAuto and the AirCurve 10 S?

The VAuto adjusts its bilevel pressures automatically within limits your clinician sets. The S delivers fixed inhale and exhale pressures, and the ST adds a backup breathing rate. All three share the same body, humidifier and 3 to 25 cm H2O range in bilevel modes.

Does the AirCurve 10 VAuto have AutoRamp?

No. Its guide lists Ramp Time as Off or 5 to 45 minutes only. AutoRamp is an AirSense feature.

Can I use AirSense 10 parts on an AirCurve 10?

Yes. Both guides list the same accessories: ClimateLineAir, SlimLine and Standard tubing, the standard and cleanable water tubs, and the standard and hypoallergenic filters. Air11 parts do not fit either machine.

What does Error 004 mean on an AirCurve 10?

ResMed lists four causes: overheating, a blocked filter, blocked tubing, or water in the tubing. Fix the cause, then unplug the power supply and plug it back in. Other 0XX errors need your care provider.

Should I upgrade from AirCurve 10 VAuto to AirCurve 11 VAuto?

Both run the VAuto algorithm; ResMed says the AirCurve 11 combines AirCurve 10 algorithms with the newer Air11 platform features such as the touch screen, Bluetooth myAir pairing and over-the-air updates. Whether and when to replace a working machine depends on your insurance replacement rules and your clinician, not just the model year.
