Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • At 10.6 oz (300 g) it is light enough to pack in a carry-on without a separate humidifier.
  • Waterless HumidX means you do not have to find or carry distilled water when traveling.
  • Runs on 100 to 240 V power, so it works in most countries with the right plug.
  • Low typical power draw (6.3 W) makes DC and battery use more practical than with a heated humidifier machine.
  • You can still start and stop therapy with the button if your phone is dead or the app is not working.

Trade-offs

  • No screen: changing comfort settings, running Mask Fit and seeing your data all require the AirMini app on a smartphone.
  • No SD card, so there is no card to pull for your own records or for OSCAR.
  • HumidX inserts are disposable and must be replaced within 30 days of opening, which is an ongoing supply cost.
  • No waterless humidification is available with the AirFit F30 full face mask.
  • Uses proprietary 15 mm AirMini tubing and connectors, so standard 22 mm CPAP hoses do not fit.
  • ResMed states it is about 2 dBA louder than an AirSense 10 for radiated noise.
  • No built-in battery; it must be plugged into AC power or a DC source.

Comfort settings you can change

These are in the patient menu. Your prescribed pressure and therapy mode are set by your clinician and are not covered here.

Ramp Time

Starts the night at a lower pressure and raises it gradually to your prescribed pressure, so falling asleep is easier.

How to change it: In the AirMini app, open the Sleep screen, tap the options on the Therapy screen, tap Ramp Time and use the spinner to choose the setting you want. If air feels too weak at the start of the night, Ramp may still be running; wait for it to finish or turn Ramp Time off in the app.

Pressure Relief (EPR)

Lowers the pressure slightly each time you breathe out, then returns to your treatment pressure when you breathe in, which many people find makes exhaling feel more natural.

How to change it: Only available in the app if your provider has enabled it. In the AirMini app, go to the Sleep screen, tap the Therapy options, tap Pressure Relief and adjust it with the switch or spinner. If you cannot see it, ask your equipment provider.

SmartStart

Starts therapy automatically when you breathe into the mask, so you do not have to press the button.

How to change it: In the AirMini app, go to the Sleep screen, tap the Therapy options and switch SmartStart on or off.

SmartStop

Stops therapy automatically a few seconds after you take your mask off.

How to change it: In the AirMini app, go to the Sleep screen, tap the Therapy options and switch SmartStop on or off. If therapy keeps stopping during the night because of a big mask leak, fix the fit first; ResMed's alternative is to turn SmartStop off.

Waterless humidity level (HumidX choice)

Moisture is set by which insert you use, not by a dial: no insert gives no added moisture, the blue HumidX is the starting point, and the gray HumidX Plus adds more for very dry air.

How to change it: Swap the insert in the connector or mask. If your nose is dry and your mask seal is good, try the HumidX Plus. If you get water droplets on your nose, mask or tubing, step down from HumidX Plus to HumidX, or from HumidX to no insert.

Airplane mode (Bluetooth off)

Turns off the machine's Bluetooth radio for use on an aircraft. You then run the machine with the Start/Stop button only.

How to change it: With the machine connected to power, press and hold the Bluetooth button for at least ten seconds until the light turns white. Press the Bluetooth button again to turn Bluetooth back on.

Cleaning and care

  1. Every day: inspect the HumidX

Check the HumidX, HumidX Plus or HumidX F20 for damage, dirt or dust. Never wash it or put it in water; ResMed says washing affects therapy.

Replace it within 30 days of opening the sealed pack, and store it somewhere clean and dry when it is not in use. It should be dry when you start therapy, so replace it if it is wet.

  2. Every day: wash the F20 or N20 connector

If you use the full face (F20) or N20 connector, wash it daily in warm water with a mild liquid detergent, using a soft bristle brush on the vent holes. Rinse under running water, shake off the excess and let it dry out of direct sunlight.

Check that the vent holes are clear before you use it again. Do not put it in a dishwasher. Replace these connectors at least every six months. For the AirFit N30 and P10 for AirMini masks, follow the cleaning steps in the mask's own guide.

  3. Every week: wash the tubing

Wash the AirMini tubing in warm water with a mild liquid detergent, rinse it thoroughly and let it dry away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not put it in a dishwasher or washing machine.

Replace the tubing if it has holes, tears or cracks, and at least every six months.

  4. Every week: wipe the machine

Unplug the machine and wipe the outside with a dry cloth. Do not use bleach, chlorine, alcohol, aromatic solutions, moisturizing or antibacterial soaps or scented oils, and keep it away from ozone and smoke, which ResMed says can damage it.

  5. Every six months: change the air filter

Slide the air filter cover off, remove the old filter, put in a new one and slide the cover back on. The filter cannot be washed.

Replace it sooner if it has holes or is clogged with dirt or dust, and keep the cover on at all times so water and dust stay out.

Replacement parts

Tubing
AirMini air tubing, 6 ft 2 in (1.9 m), 15 mm inner diameter with a proprietary connector. Standard 22 mm CPAP tubing does not fit. Replace at least every 6 months.
Filters
AirMini air filters (standard; a ResMed hypoallergenic filter is also approved). Not washable. Replace at least every 6 months, sooner if damaged or dirty.
Water chamber
None. The AirMini has no water chamber; it uses disposable waterless HumidX, HumidX Plus or HumidX F20 inserts instead.
Replacement notes
HumidX inserts must be replaced within 30 days of opening and cannot be washed. The F20 and N20 connectors for AirMini should be replaced at least every six months. ResMed sells HumidX in 6-packs and AirMini filters in 2-packs. Use only ResMed AirMini parts, masks and accessories; ResMed warns that other parts may reduce treatment effectiveness or cause carbon dioxide rebreathing.

Troubleshooting

Air is leaking around my mask or the mask is noisy

Refit the mask using its user guide and run Mask Fit in the AirMini app to check the seal. Also check that the tubing, connector and HumidX are assembled correctly.

The pressure feels too low or I feel I am not getting enough air

Ramp may still be running; wait for the pressure to build or turn Ramp Time off in the app. Check the HumidX and the connector vent for blockages, and replace the HumidX if it is wet. If the pressure still feels wrong after that, call your provider; do not try to change your prescribed pressure.

Therapy will not start

Check that the power supply is plugged in firmly at both ends and that the green lights on the power supply and above the Start/Stop button are on. If SmartStart is off, press the Start/Stop button.

Therapy stopped during the night

The tubing may have come loose; reconnect it and press Start/Stop. If you have a large mask leak and SmartStop is on, the machine may think you took the mask off, so fix the fit or turn SmartStop off in the app.

My nose or mouth is dry

Refit the mask to stop leaks first, since leaking air dries you out. If the seal is good, switch from the blue HumidX to the gray HumidX Plus.

Water droplets on my nose, mask or tubing

The humidity is too high for the conditions. With HumidX Plus, go back to the regular HumidX; with HumidX or HumidX F20, try a night without it. You may need to change inserts when the weather or climate changes.

The app will not pair or reconnect

Make sure your phone is not busy with another Bluetooth device, and that the AirMini is switched on. If it still fails, switch the AirMini off at the wall, wait 10 seconds, switch it back on, and repeat the pairing steps. If the QR code will not scan, type in the four-digit key from the back of the machine instead.

The Bluetooth light is white and I cannot pair

The machine is in airplane mode. Press the Bluetooth button for 3 seconds until the light flashes blue, then pair from the app.

The machine sounds louder than my bedside CPAP

ResMed says the AirMini is about 2 dBA louder than an AirSense 10 for radiated noise, so some extra sound is expected. Keep the air filter cover on, keep bedding away from the air inlet, and check the mask seal, since leaks add noise.

Travel and power

This is the machine built for travel. ResMed states the AirMini meets FAA requirements (RTCA/DO-160, section 21, category M) for all phases of air travel, and you can download an air travel compliance letter from ResMed's website. On the plane, put the machine in airplane mode by holding the Bluetooth button for at least ten seconds until the light turns white, do not use the app, and start therapy with the Start/Stop button. Check with your airline about power at your seat and whether a medical device counts toward your carry-on limit.

The 20W power supply accepts 100 to 240 V at 50 to 60 Hz, and is also rated for 115 V, 400 Hz aircraft power, so you only need a plug adapter in most countries. The AirMini has no internal battery. ResMed sells the AirMini DC/DC converter 65W, which runs the machine from a 12 V or 24 V cigarette lighter style socket in a car, boat or RV. For off-grid use, ResMed suggests asking your CPAP supplies store about portable power options; its own guide says to use only ResMed AirMini parts, including batteries, so confirm any battery is approved for the AirMini before you buy.

Your sleep data

The AirMini stores your therapy data internally and shares it with the AirMini app over Bluetooth; the app shows a daily sleep score and usage. If you opt in, the app uploads data to ResMed's cloud, where your equipment provider can see it in AirView for compliance reports. You do not need the app to use the machine, but you do need it to see your data or change comfort settings.

There is no SD card. ResMed says this was deliberate to keep the machine as small as possible. The AirMini is also not supported by myAir, which is for ResMed's bedside machines. OSCAR, the free data viewer, imports ResMed data from the SD card of machines such as the S9 and AirSense series; with no card to read, OSCAR cannot import AirMini data. For a compliance report, ask your equipment provider, who can pull it from AirView.

Supplies that can help

CPAP travel case

A padded bag that protects the machine, mask, tubing and power supply in transit.

CPAP DC power cord or converter

A cord or converter that runs a CPAP from a 12 V or 24 V DC source, such as a car outlet, RV or deep cycle …

Replacement CPAP air filters

The air inlet filter keeps dust and lint out of the machine and your airway; it is a cheap part that needs regular replacement.

Mild unscented soap for CPAP cleaning

Plain, mild dish soap is the cleaning agent most CPAP makers and the FDA point to for masks, tubing and humidifier chambers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the AirMini without the app?

Yes. You can start and stop therapy with the Start/Stop button, and the machine runs your prescribed settings on its own. You need the AirMini app to change comfort settings like Ramp Time or SmartStart, run Mask Fit, or see your sleep data.

Does the AirMini have a humidifier?

Not a water humidifier. It uses waterless HumidX inserts that sit in the mask connector or the F20 mask: the blue HumidX, the gray HumidX Plus for very dry air, and HumidX F20 for F20 series full face masks. There is no waterless option when you use the AirFit F30.

Can I use the AirMini on a plane?

ResMed states it meets FAA requirements for all phases of air travel, and you can print a compliance letter from ResMed's website. Turn on airplane mode by holding the Bluetooth button for ten seconds until the light is white, and use the Start/Stop button instead of the app. Ask your airline about seat power before you fly.

Does the AirMini have a battery?

No. It must be plugged into AC power or run from a DC source through the ResMed AirMini DC/DC converter 65W, which works with 12 V or 24 V vehicle sockets. ResMed recommends asking your CPAP supplies store about portable battery options.

Can I see AirMini data in OSCAR or myAir?

No to both. The AirMini has no SD card for OSCAR to read, and ResMed says myAir does not support the AirMini. Your data is in the AirMini app, and your provider can see it in AirView if you allowed cloud upload.

Can I use my regular CPAP hose with the AirMini?

No. The AirMini uses its own 15 mm tubing with a proprietary connector that is not compatible with standard 22 mm CPAP connectors. Replace the AirMini tubing at least every six months.
