Mild unscented soap for CPAP cleaning
Plain, mild dish soap is the cleaning agent most CPAP makers and the FDA point to for masks, tubing and humidifier chambers.
Why it helps
You do not need a special machine to keep CPAP gear clean. The FDA says most CPAP accessories, including masks, hoses and humidifier tanks, can be cleaned with mild soap and water as described in the owner's manual, and that some manufacturers recommend diluted vinegar. ResMed's AirSense 11 guide describes washing the tubing, humidifier tub and outlet connector weekly in warm water with a mild dishwashing liquid. Unscented soap avoids leaving a smell you then breathe all night.
How to choose
Choose a plain, mild dish soap without added moisturizers, antibacterial agents, bleach or strong fragrance, since residue can irritate skin or affect silicone. A little goes a long way. Rinse thoroughly and let parts air dry out of direct sunlight or heat.
The FDA has warned that ozone gas and UV light devices sold to clean CPAP machines are not FDA cleared or approved for that use, that ozone and UV can break down hoses and masks, and that it has received reports of asthma attacks, headaches and breathlessness after ozone cleaner use. Soap and water is the method the FDA describes. Never put a machine with an electrical cord into water.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a CPAP cleaning machine?
The FDA says these machines are not necessary and that most CPAP parts can be cleaned with mild soap and water. It has not cleared or approved any ozone or UV device for cleaning CPAP machines, and it has authorized only one add-on device for bacterial reduction on specific masks and hoses.
Can I use vinegar instead of soap?
Some manufacturers recommend diluted vinegar, according to the FDA. ResMed's AirSense 11 guide allows a solution of 1 part vinegar to 9 parts water at room temperature for the humidifier tub and outlet connector, with mild dishwashing liquid for the tubing.
Can I put CPAP parts in the dishwasher?
Only parts your manual allows. ResMed says the AirSense 11 humidifier tub and outlet connector may go in a dishwasher at no more than 65 C, but the air tubing should not go in a dishwasher or washing machine.
