myAir Score Explained: How ResMed Calculates It

Your myAir score is out of 100 and is built from four parts: usage hours (up to 70 points), mask seal (up to 20), events per hour (up to 5) and mask on and off (up to 5). Most of the score comes from how long you use your machine, so a low score usually means short use or a poor seal. It is a motivation tool, not a medical assessment, so ask your doctor about what your numbers mean for you.

Signs

  • Lower score than you expected
  • Low mask seal points
  • Score missing for a night
  • Low points for mask on and off

Common causes

Usage hours
ResMed gives 10 points per hour of use, so 2.3 hours earns 23 points, up to a maximum of 70 points.
Mask seal
Up to 20 points for minimal leak, 10 to 15 for moderate leak, and 0 to 10 for higher leak.
Events per hour
Minimal breathing events earn 4 to 5 points. Events are the apneas and hypopneas counted each hour.
Mask on and off
Fewer removals earn more points. Removing the mask one or two times earns 5 points; ResMed notes everyone takes it off at least once.

Fixes to try, easiest first

  1. Use your machine longer

Since usage is worth up to 70 points, extra time with the mask on raises your score more than anything else. Put the mask back on if you wake without it.

  2. Improve your mask seal

Refit the mask lying down with the air on, run Mask Fit, and clean the cushion daily. If you use a nasal or pillows mask, watch for mouth leak.

  3. Keep the mask on through the night

Frequent on and off can point to a mask comfort problem or broken sleep. Work on the cause rather than the score.

  4. Check your connection if the score is missing

Make sure the machine is plugged in, has a wireless signal, is not in airplane mode, and that the serial and device numbers in myAir match your machine.

  5. Talk to your doctor about events with your clinician

If your events per hour stay high, ask your doctor or equipment provider. Do not change settings yourself.

When to call your doctor

Contact your sleep doctor if your events per hour stay high or are rising, if you have low scores because you cannot tolerate the mask, or if you still feel tired even with high scores. ResMed itself cannot answer therapy questions and directs patients to their equipment provider and doctor.

Supplies that can help

CPAP chinstrap

A soft strap that supports the jaw to help keep the mouth closed, used mainly with nasal and nasal pillow masks to reduce mouth leaks.

CPAP mask wipes

Pre-moistened wipes for a quick daily wipe of the mask cushion, mostly to remove skin oils between proper washes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good myAir score?

The score is out of 100, and higher is better. Because usage alone is worth up to 70 points, regular full night use is the biggest factor. Your doctor cares most about your usage, leak and events, so focus on those numbers too.

Why is my myAir score low when I slept all night?

Check your mask seal and mask on and off points. A poor seal can cost you up to 20 points. Also confirm your data uploaded fully.

Does myAir count naps?

ResMed says myAir presents your score for your first sleep session each day and updates if another session is recorded for the same day.

Can my doctor see my myAir score?

myAir is your app. Your equipment provider and doctor typically see your therapy data through their own systems. Ask them what they can see.
