ResMed · Under the nose full face mask (hybrid, minimal contact)

ResMed AirFit X30i

A tube-up oral nasal mask that pairs a nasal pillows cushion (sealing at the nostrils) with a separate oral cushion over the mouth. It uses the AirFit F30i style frame and headgear with magnetic clips, and the tube connects at the top of your head.

This mask uses magnets

The AirFit X30i has magnetic headgear clips. It was not one of the masks named in the FDA's January 18, 2024 safety communication on ResMed masks with magnets, but its own labeling carries the same contraindication ResMed adopted in its December 20, 2023 update: do not use it if you, or anyone in close physical contact with you while the mask is in use, has an active medical implant that interacts with magnets (such as a pacemaker, implantable cardioverter defibrillator, neurostimulator, cerebrospinal fluid shunt, or insulin or infusion pump) or a metallic implant or object containing ferromagnetic material (such as aneurysm clips, embolic coils, stents, valves, electrodes, certain hearing or balance implants, ocular implants, or metallic splinters in the eye). Keep the mask magnets at least 6 inches (150 mm) away from any implant or medical device that may be affected by magnetic interference. If this applies to you or a bed partner, stop using the mask and ask your clinician or mask provider for a mask without magnets.

SizesNasal pillows: Small, Medium, Large, Oral cushion: Standard, Frame: Small, Standard, Large
Works withAll standard CPAP, APAP and BiPAP machines with a 22 mm tube connection, including ResMed AirSense and AirCurve, Philips, React Health, Fisher & Paykel and other brands. If your machine has a mask setting, choose the option the X30i user guide lists for this mask.

Usually suits

  • People who like nasal pillows but breathe through their mouth
  • Full face users with bridge of nose irritation
  • Side and stomach sleepers

Design

  • Nasal pillows cushion plus a separate oral cushion
  • Top-of-head tube connection with quick-release elbow
  • SpringFit frame carries air from the top of the head
  • Magnetic headgear clips
  • QuietAir diffused venting
  • Uses the shared AirFit F30i/X30i headgear and is interchangeable with the AirFit F30i cushion

Strengths and trade-offs

  • Covers the mouth without anything on the bridge of the nose
  • Tube up top makes it easier to sleep in any position
  • Pillows give a seal at the nostrils that some people find more stable than an under-the-nose cushion
  • Billed as a combination oral/nasal mask, so ResMed says each cushion may be replaced up to twice a month
  • Contains magnets, with ResMed's implant contraindication
  • Nasal pillows put airflow directly into the nostrils, which can cause dryness or soreness at first
  • More separate cushions to clean and reorder than a one-piece full face mask
  • Two sizes to choose (pillows and frame)

Finding your size

You choose a pillows size (Small, Medium, Large) and a frame size (Small, Standard, Large); the oral cushion is one size. ResMed sells complete starter packs by frame size with all pillow sizes so your supplier can fit the right one. The pillows should rest on the edge of your nostrils without pushing up into them.

How to fit it

  1. Hold the mask in front of your face

With one hand on the bottom of the cushion and the other on the frame, position the mask in front of your face.

  2. Place the cushion and pull on the headgear

Place the cushion under your nose so it sits against your face. With the ResMed logo on the headgear facing up, pull the headgear and frame over your head.

  3. Attach the lower straps

Bring the lower headgear bands under your ears and attach the magnetic clips to the frame connectors.

  4. Adjust upper then lower straps

Undo the tabs on the upper bands and pull evenly, then repeat with the lower bands.

  5. Connect the tube

Connect the air tubing from your machine to the mask elbow. If you have long hair, slide it through the back of the headgear; a ponytail should sit high enough to pass through the back.

Common problems and fixes

Pillows sore or dry inside the nose

Check the pillows size: they should seal at the edge of the nostrils, not push in. Raising humidity in your machine's comfort menu or a saline spray can help with dryness.

Leak from the mouth cushion

Adjust the lower straps evenly and re-seat the mask with the air on. Overtightening the upper straps can lift the oral cushion.

Frame sits too close to your eyes or ears

As with the F30i frame, try a bigger frame if it slides toward your eyes and a smaller one if it slides back toward your ears.

Cleaning and care

Wash the pillows and oral cushions daily in warm water with a mild liquid detergent, rinse well and air dry out of direct sunlight. Wash the headgear, frame and elbow weekly the same way. Follow the X30i user guide for full instructions, and do not use ozone or UV cleaners, which ResMed has not validated for its masks.

How often to replace parts

Mask
Billed as a combination oral/nasal mask (A7027), not a standard full face mask; ask your supplier what your plan allows, commonly 1 complete mask every 3 months
Cushion
ResMed says each of the oral cushion (A7028) and nasal pillows cushion (A7029) may be replaced up to 2 times per month, because the X30i is billed as a combination oral/nasal mask; other payers may differ
Headgear
Up to 1 every 6 months (Medicare A7035)

Supplies that can help

Saline nasal spray

Salt water spray that moistens and clears the nose, a simple aid for the congestion and dryness some people get on CPAP.

Nasal moisturizer gel

A water-based or saline gel applied inside or around the nostrils to soothe dryness and soreness from CPAP airflow.

CPAP pillow

A pillow with cutouts or a contoured edge so a mask and hose are not pushed out of place when you sleep on your side.

CPAP mask wipes

Pre-moistened wipes for a quick daily wipe of the mask cushion, mostly to remove skin oils between proper washes.

Mild unscented soap for CPAP cleaning

Plain, mild dish soap is the cleaning agent most CPAP makers and the FDA point to for masks, tubing and humidifier chambers.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AirFit X30i a full face mask or a nasal pillows mask?

It is both: ResMed calls it an oral nasal mask. Nasal pillows seal at your nostrils and a separate oral cushion covers your mouth, so it treats mouth breathers without touching the bridge of the nose.

Can I use the AirFit X30i with my AirFit F30i frame?

ResMed says the X30i is interchangeable with the AirFit F30i cushion and uses the shared F30i/X30i headgear, so patients can switch between the two. Ask your supplier which parts you need.

How often can I get new AirFit X30i cushions?

ResMed says each of the oral and nasal pillows cushions may be replaced up to twice a month, because the X30i is billed as a combination oral/nasal mask. Other payers may differ, so check your plan.
