ResMed · Under the nose full face mask (hybrid, minimal contact)
ResMed AirFit F30
A minimal-contact full face mask whose cushion sits under your nose and around your mouth instead of over the bridge of the nose. The tube connects at the front of the mask (tube down). It has magnetic lower headgear clips.
The AirFit F30 has magnetic headgear clips. Under ResMed's updated labeling (announced December 20, 2023) and the FDA's January 18, 2024 safety communication, which the FDA classed as a Class I recall (a correction, not a removal from the market), the mask is contraindicated if you, or anyone in close physical contact with you while the mask is in use, has an active medical implant that interacts with magnets (such as a pacemaker, implantable cardioverter defibrillator, neurostimulator, cerebrospinal fluid shunt, or insulin or infusion pump) or a metallic implant or object containing ferromagnetic material (such as aneurysm clips, embolic coils, stents, valves, electrodes, certain hearing or balance implants, ocular implants, or metallic splinters in the eye). Keep the mask magnets at least 6 inches (150 mm) away from any implant or medical device that may be affected by magnetic interference. If this applies to you or a bed partner, stop using the mask and ask your clinician or mask provider for a mask without magnets.
Usually suits
- Mouth breathers with irritation on the bridge of the nose
- People who wear glasses or read in bed
- People who feel closed in by larger masks
Design
- Under-the-nose cushion that leaves the bridge of the nose clear
- Magnetic clips on the lower headgear straps
- Quick-release elbow with QuietAir venting (ResMed lists 21 dBA sound power)
- Therapy pressure range of 3 to 30 cm H2O per the user guide
- Open field of vision, so glasses can be worn in bed
Strengths and trade-offs
- No cushion on the bridge of the nose, which avoids marks and sores there
- Smaller and lighter on the face than a traditional full face mask
- Works for mouth breathers who find traditional masks claustrophobic
- Contains magnets, with ResMed's implant contraindication
- Only two cushion sizes, so some faces fall outside the range
- Front tube connection can drag when you change positions, unlike the tube-up AirFit F30i
- Under-the-nose seals can be less stable at higher pressures or with a lot of movement for some people
Finding your size
Sizing is by cushion. ResMed publishes a printable AirFit F30 fitting template: hold it under your nose with your mouth relaxed and closed and pick the size whose outline covers your nostrils and mouth without overhanging the sides of your nose. Print it at 100% scale so the measurements are accurate. If you fall between sizes, your supplier can help you compare.
How to fit it
Release the clips
Twist and pull both magnetic clips away from the frame.
Place the cushion under your nose
Set the cushion under your nose and around your mouth so it sits comfortably against your face. With the ResMed logo on the headgear facing up, pull the headgear over your head.
Attach the lower straps
Bring the lower straps under your ears and snap the magnetic clips onto the frame.
Adjust the straps
Undo the tabs on the upper straps and pull evenly, then repeat with the lower straps. If the headgear sits too close to your ears, adjust the top strap.
Check the seal with air on
Connect the tube, turn your machine on and lie down. Tighten only enough to stop leaks.
Common problems and fixes
Leak at the sides of the nose
Re-seat the cushion so it sits centered under your nose, then adjust the upper straps evenly. A persistent leak there can mean the cushion size is wrong; ask your supplier to recheck with the fitting template.
Cushion presses on the underside of the nose
Loosen the upper straps a little. Overtightening pushes the cushion into the nose rather than improving the seal.
Tube pulls the mask when you turn
Route the tube over your headboard with a hose hanger, or ask your supplier about the tube-up AirFit F30i.
Cleaning and care
Clean the cushion, frame and elbow daily by hand in warm water with a mild liquid detergent, rinse well and air dry out of direct sunlight. Each week, soak the headgear in warm soapy water, swish it, rinse and air dry. Keep the magnetic clips attached to the lower straps when you take the mask apart.

Supplies that can help
Pre-moistened wipes for a quick daily wipe of the mask cushion, mostly to remove skin oils between proper washes.
Plain, mild dish soap is the cleaning agent most CPAP makers and the FDA point to for masks, tubing and humidifier chambers.
A simple hook or hanger for drying CPAP tubing vertically after washing, and for keeping it off the floor.
Soft fabric sleeves that wrap mask headgear straps to stop red lines, rubbing and hair tangles.

Frequently asked questions
Does the AirFit F30 touch the bridge of my nose?
No. The F30 cushion seals under your nose and around your mouth, which is why it is called a minimal-contact full face mask.
What is the difference between the AirFit F30 and F30i?
Both use an under-the-nose full face cushion. The F30 connects the tube at the front of the mask, while the F30i connects it at the top of your head and comes in more cushion and frame sizes.
How do I find my AirFit F30 size?
Use ResMed's printable AirFit F30 fitting template, printed at 100% scale, or ask your supplier to size you. The cushion comes in Small and Medium.
