ResMed · Under the nose full face mask (hybrid, minimal contact)

ResMed AirFit F30i

An under-the-nose full face mask with a top-of-head tube connection. Air flows through the flexible frame arms to the cushion, so the tube stays out of the way and you can sleep on your side or stomach. Its cushion is interchangeable with the AirFit X30i and AirTouch F30i.

This mask uses magnets

The AirFit F30i has magnetic headgear clips. Under ResMed's updated labeling (announced December 20, 2023) and the FDA's January 18, 2024 safety communication, which the FDA classed as a Class I recall (a correction, not a removal from the market), the mask is contraindicated if you, or anyone in close physical contact with you while the mask is in use, has an active medical implant that interacts with magnets (such as a pacemaker, implantable cardioverter defibrillator, neurostimulator, cerebrospinal fluid shunt, or insulin or infusion pump) or a metallic implant or object containing ferromagnetic material (such as aneurysm clips, embolic coils, stents, valves, electrodes, certain hearing or balance implants, ocular implants, or metallic splinters in the eye). Keep the mask magnets at least 6 inches (150 mm) away from any implant or medical device that may be affected by magnetic interference. If this applies to you or a bed partner, stop using the mask and ask your clinician or mask provider for a mask without magnets.

Usually suits

  • Mouth breathers who sleep on their side or stomach
  • Restless sleepers
  • People with irritation on the bridge of the nose

Design

  • Under-the-nose full face cushion
  • Top-of-head tube connection with a quick-release elbow
  • Frame arms carry air from the top of the head to the cushion
  • Magnetic clips on the lower headgear straps
  • Therapy pressure range of 4 to 30 cm H2O per the user guide
  • Cushion interchangeable with AirFit X30i and AirTouch F30i cushions

Strengths and trade-offs

  • Tube on top of the head makes side and stomach sleeping easier
  • Nothing on the bridge of the nose
  • Four cushion sizes and three frame sizes give a wider fit range than the F30
  • Contains magnets, with ResMed's implant contraindication
  • Two sizes to get right (cushion and frame)
  • ResMed notes that SmartStop (auto-off) may not work reliably with this mask on some machines
  • Air path through the frame means the frame sides can feel warm or be pressed by your pillow

Finding your size

Two separate choices: the cushion and the frame. Use ResMed's printable AirFit F30i fitting template (print at 100% scale) to pick the cushion size under your nose. For the frame, ResMed's guide says: if the frame falls back over your head or sits too close to your ears, try a smaller frame; if it falls forward or sits too close to your eyes, try a bigger frame.

How to fit it

  1. Release the clips

Twist and pull both magnetic clips away from the frame connectors.

  2. Place the cushion

Set the cushion under your nose so it sits comfortably against your face. With the ResMed logo on the headgear facing up, pull the headgear and frame over your head.

  3. Attach the lower straps

Bring the lower straps under your ears and snap the magnetic clips onto the frame connectors.

  4. Adjust the straps

Undo the tabs on the upper straps and pull evenly, then repeat with the lower straps.

  5. Connect the elbow on top

Attach the elbow to the top of the frame and connect your tube. Turn the machine on and check the fit in your usual sleeping position.

Common problems and fixes

Frame sits too close to your eyes or slides forward

ResMed's guide says to try a bigger frame size.

Frame slides back or sits too close to your ears

ResMed's guide says to try a smaller frame size.

Leak at the sides of the nose

Re-center the cushion under your nose and adjust the upper straps evenly. If it continues, recheck the cushion size with the fitting template; the wide sizes suit broader noses.

Machine does not stop when you take the mask off

ResMed says SmartStop may not operate effectively with this mask on some machines. Turn the machine off with the button instead.

Cleaning and care

Every day, hand wash the cushion in warm water with a mild liquid detergent, using a soft brush on the vent holes, then rinse and air dry out of direct sunlight. Weekly, wash the headgear, frame and elbow the same way. Keep the magnetic clips attached to the lower straps when you take it apart.

Supplies that can help

CPAP pillow

A pillow with cutouts or a contoured edge so a mask and hose are not pushed out of place when you sleep on your side.

CPAP mask wipes

Pre-moistened wipes for a quick daily wipe of the mask cushion, mostly to remove skin oils between proper washes.

Mild unscented soap for CPAP cleaning

Plain, mild dish soap is the cleaning agent most CPAP makers and the FDA point to for masks, tubing and humidifier chambers.

CPAP hose management system

A stand or arm that lifts the tubing above the bed so it does not drag on the mask when you turn over.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put an AirFit X30i or AirTouch F30i cushion on my AirFit F30i frame?

ResMed lists the AirFit X30i and AirTouch F30i cushions as interchangeable with the AirFit F30i. That lets you try a nasal pillows plus oral cushion or a fabric cushion without changing your frame and headgear.

Which AirFit F30i frame size do I need?

Start with Standard. If the frame slides back toward your ears, ResMed suggests a smaller frame; if it slides forward toward your eyes, a bigger one.

Is the AirFit F30i good for side sleepers?

It is designed for it: the tube connects on top of your head so it does not pull across the pillow. A CPAP pillow with cutouts can help keep pressure off the frame arms.
