Fisher & Paykel Healthcare · Nasal pillows mask

F&P Brevida

A nasal pillows mask with an AirPillow seal that inflates to seal in and around the nose instead of only inside the nostrils. It has two seal sizes, one-size adjustable headgear and a washable diffuser to soften exhaled air.

SizesSeal: Extra Small to Small (XS-S), Seal: Medium to Large (M-L), Headgear: one size, Pack with both seals
Works withAll standard CPAP, APAP and BiPAP machines with a 22 mm tube connection.

Usually suits

  • Nose breathers who want a small mask at moderate to higher pressures
  • People with facial hair
  • People who want a magnet-free pillows mask

Design

  • AirPillow seal with an extra-thin (0.25 mm) silicone sealing area
  • Side supports designed to keep the seal from dislodging
  • Washable diffuser over the exhaust to reduce noise and draft
  • Adjustable one-size headgear
  • Operating pressure range 4 to 25 cm H2O
  • No magnets (F&P states its masks do not contain magnets)

Strengths and trade-offs

  • Rated up to 25 cm H2O, a wider range than many pillows masks
  • Only two seal sizes, so sizing is quick
  • Diffuser spreads exhaled air, which helps if the draft bothers a bed partner
  • Magnet-free
  • The diffuser is an extra part to wash weekly and replace
  • Nasal breathing only
  • Two sizes means less fine tuning than masks with three or four pillow sizes

Finding your size

There are only two seal sizes, XS-S and M-L, and one headgear size. F&P has no Brevida sizing template and its myMask app does not size pillows, so the simplest approach is the pack that includes both seals. The seal should fit securely into your nostrils with the two openings not folded in.

How to fit it

  1. Check the mask

Remove all packaging. Inspect for cracks or tears and make sure the exhaust holes on the elbow are clear.

  2. Place the seal

Hold the silicone seal away from your nose, spread open the soft side wings with your fingers, then guide the two openings into your nostrils.

  3. Pull the headgear on

Hold the mask frame in place with one hand and pull the headgear over your head with the other, with the straps sitting above your ears.

  4. Adjust gently

Tighten or loosen the side straps until you get a comfortable seal. Do not over-tighten.

Common problems and fixes

Leak at the nostrils

Lift the seal off your nose and reposition it so both openings sit securely in your nostrils. Check that neither opening has folded inward. If leaks continue, try the other seal size.

Straps leave marks

The straps are probably too tight. Loosen them until the seal holds at pressure without pressing. Strap covers can reduce friction.

Noisy or drafty exhaust

Make sure the diffuser is attached to the elbow and clean. Wash it weekly and replace it when it looks worn.

Dry mouth

Air escaping through your mouth. A chinstrap is a common fix; ask your clinician about a full face mask if it continues.

Cleaning and care

To take it apart, unhook the headgear clips from the frame, remove the silicone seal from the frame, unclip the diffuser from the elbow and remove the swivel from the mask tube. The elbow and mask tube are not meant to be removed at home.

Wash the mask (without headgear and diffuser) after each use in soap dissolved in lukewarm water, rinse well and dry out of direct sunlight. After 7 days, hand wash the headgear and gently hand wash the diffuser in lukewarm soapy water without scrubbing, soak no longer than 10 minutes, rinse until no soap is left and air dry out of direct sunlight.

Supplies that can help

CPAP chinstrap

A soft strap that supports the jaw to help keep the mouth closed, used mainly with nasal and nasal pillow masks to reduce mouth leaks.

CPAP mask strap covers

Soft fabric sleeves that wrap mask headgear straps to stop red lines, rubbing and hair tangles.

Saline nasal spray

Salt water spray that moistens and clears the nose, a simple aid for the congestion and dryness some people get on CPAP.

CPAP mask wipes

Pre-moistened wipes for a quick daily wipe of the mask cushion, mostly to remove skin oils between proper washes.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes does the F&P Brevida come in?

Two seal sizes, Extra Small to Small (XS-S) and Medium to Large (M-L), with one-size headgear. A pack with both seals is available if you are not sure which you need.

What is the diffuser on the Brevida for?

It covers the exhaust and spreads exhaled air to reduce noise and draft. It is washable; F&P says to hand wash it gently each week.

What pressure range is the Brevida rated for?

The use and care guide lists 4 to 25 cm H2O. Your pressure is set by your clinician; the mask just needs to be rated for it.

Why does my Brevida leak even though it is tight?

Tighter usually makes pillows leak more, because it pushes the seal out of shape. Loosen the straps, reseat both openings in your nostrils and check neither is folded inward. If it still leaks, try the other seal size.
