Philips Respironics · Nasal mask
Philips Respironics Wisp
A compact minimal contact nasal mask with a small cushion that covers the tip of the nose, a reversible fabric frame (or a clear silicone frame), and a front hose with quick release tabs. Wisp is sold with either magnetic or non-magnetic headgear clips, and the magnetic version was part of Philips' 2022 magnet correction. A Wisp Youth version also exists.
Philips states that "magnetic or non-magnetic clips are available" for Wisp and that the mask "has a configuration that contains magnets". This warning applies if your Wisp uses magnetic clips. Philips Respironics issued an Urgent Medical Device Correction dated August 29, 2022 for this mask, and the FDA published a safety communication about it on September 6, 2022 ("Certain Philips Respironics Masks for BiPAP, CPAP Machines Recalled Due to Safety Issue with Magnets That May Affect Certain Medical Devices"). The updated Philips contraindication reads: "Use of the mask is contraindicated for patients and their household members, caregivers, and bed partners that may be in close vicinity to patients using the masks, that have implanted devices that may be affected by magnets, including but not limited to": pacemakers; implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD); neurostimulators; magnetic metallic implants, electrodes or valves placed in the upper limbs, torso, or higher (neck and head); CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) shunts such as a VP shunt; aneurysm clips; embolic coils; intracranial aneurysm intravascular flow disruption devices; metallic cranial plates, screws, burr hole covers and bone substitute devices; metallic splinters in the eye; ocular implants (such as glaucoma or retinal implants); certain contact lenses with metal; implants to restore hearing or balance that have an implanted magnet (such as cochlear implants, implanted bone conduction hearing devices and auditory brainstem implants); magnetic denture attachments; metallic gastrointestinal clips; metallic stents (aneurysm, coronary, tracheobronchial, biliary); implantable ports and pumps (such as insulin pumps); hypoglossal nerve stimulators; devices labeled as MR (magnetic resonance) unsafe; and magnetic metallic implants not labeled for MR or not evaluated for safety in a magnetic field. The updated Philips warning reads: "Magnets with a magnetic field strength of 400 mT are used in the mask. With the exception of the devices identified in the contraindication, ensure the mask is kept at least 6 inches (approx. 15.24 cm) away from any other medical implants or medical devices that can be impacted by the magnetic fields." Philips reported 14 cases of possible interference with implanted devices, including pacemaker failure and defibrillator resets. If any of this applies to you or to anyone who sleeps near you, stop using the mask, call your doctor about a non-magnetic mask, and contact Philips Customer Care at 1-800-345-6443.
Usually suits
- Nose breathers who want a small nasal mask
- People who dislike nasal pillows in the nostrils
- People with limited dexterity (magnetic clips), if no implant contraindication applies

- Magnetic clips are easier to attach for people with limited hand dexterity
- Tube holder loop lets you route the hose over the head
- Magnetic clip version is contraindicated for some implants in you or a bed partner
- Nasal only, so mouth breathing leaks
- Front hose connection can pull when you change position
Finding your size
Use the Wisp sizing gauge to choose the cushion that fits the width of your nose without blocking the nostrils. The top of the cushion may sit between the bridge and the tip of your nose. Philips' fit pack comes with three cushion sizes so you can compare them on your face.
How to fit it
Choose the cushion
Use the gauge to pick the cushion that fits the width of your nose without blocking your nostrils.
Open the headgear
Disconnect one headgear tab or clip. If you have clips, twist them outward to release.
Put it on
Pull the headgear over your head so it lies flat against the back, and place the cushion over your nose. Reattach the tab or press the clip back into the frame slot.
Adjust the straps
Adjust the side and bottom straps evenly. Do not overtighten; Philips says the headgear should feel loose and comfortable.
Connect and settle
Connect the Wisp tubing and elbow to the front of the mask. You can slide the tube through the crown loop. Lie in different positions and make final adjustments lying down.
Common problems and fixes
Leak at the bridge into the eyes
The cushion may be sitting too high or be too large. Lower it toward the tip of the nose and recheck the size.
Cushion blocking the nostrils
The cushion is too small. Move up a size.
Dry mouth or leaks through the mouth
Try a chinstrap. If that does not help, ask your prescriber about a full face mask.
Hose pulls the mask during the night
Route the hose through the crown loop over your head, or use a hose hanger.
Cleaning and care
Hand wash the cushion and frame in warm water with a mild liquid dish soap, rinse thoroughly and air dry. Hand wash the headgear and fabric frame with mild soap and hang them to dry. Inspect the cushion daily for wear. Do not use bleach, alcohol, or ozone or UV cleaners.
How often to replace parts
- Mask
- 1 every 3 months (Medicare A7034, nasal interface)
- Cushion
- Up to 2 per month (Medicare A7032, nasal cushion)
- Headgear
- 1 every 6 months (Medicare A7035)
Supplies that can help
A soft strap that supports the jaw to help keep the mouth closed, used mainly with nasal and nasal pillow masks to reduce mouth leaks.
A simple hook or hanger for drying CPAP tubing vertically after washing, and for keeping it off the floor.
Salt water spray that moistens and clears the nose, a simple aid for the congestion and dryness some people get on CPAP.
Plain, mild dish soap is the cleaning agent most CPAP makers and the FDA point to for masks, tubing and humidifier chambers.
Soft fabric sleeves that wrap mask headgear straps to stop red lines, rubbing and hair tangles.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Philips Wisp have magnets?
It depends on the clips. Philips sells Wisp with magnetic or non-magnetic headgear clips, and magnetic Wisp and Wisp Youth masks were included in the 2022 magnet correction. If you or a bed partner has a listed implant, ask your supplier for the non-magnetic clips or another mask.
Should I use the fabric or clear frame on my Wisp?
Philips offers a reversible fabric frame that feels softer and a clear silicone frame that is less visible. The cushions and fit are the same, so it comes down to comfort and preference.
What sizes does the Wisp come in?
Philips lists Petite, Small/Medium, Large and Extra Large cushions. The fit pack includes three sizes so you can try them against your nose.
