F&P Solo Nasal

An under-the-nose nasal mask with Fisher & Paykel's AutoFit headgear: no side straps or clips to set, you stretch it over your head and push the cushion in to tighten. F&P launched it in the US in April 2024. The same headgear and frame also take the Solo Pillows cushion.

SizesNasal cushion: Small, Nasal cushion: Medium, Nasal cushion: Large, Nasal cushion: Wide, Headgear: one size, Fit pack with S, M and L cushions
Works withAll standard CPAP, APAP and BiPAP machines with a 22 mm tube connection. F&P lists the ResMed AirMini as needing an adapter.

Usually suits

  • New users who struggle with strap adjustment
  • People who tend to over-tighten their mask
  • Nose breathers who want minimal contact on the nose bridge
  • People who need a magnet-free mask

Design

  • AutoFit headgear with AutoLock: stretch on, then push the cushion toward your nose to tighten or pull it away to loosen
  • No conventional side straps, hook and loop tabs or clips to adjust
  • Under-the-nose nasal cushion with Dynamic Support Technology
  • One-size headgear shared with the F&P Solo Pillows cushion
  • Operating pressure range 4 to 20 cm H2O
  • No magnets (F&P states its masks do not contain magnets)
  • Support for setup, fitting and cleaning in the F&P myMask app

Strengths and trade-offs

  • No straps to over-tighten, which F&P's guide warns can cause facial marks and pressure sores
  • Nothing on the bridge of the nose
  • Magnet-free, so it is an option where a mask with magnets is contraindicated
  • You can swap to the pillows cushion on the same headgear and frame without buying a different mask
  • Rated only up to 20 cm H2O, so it does not cover the top of every BiPAP prescription
  • Nasal only: if you breathe through your mouth you may need a chinstrap or a full face mask
  • Cushion types are sold separately
  • The AirMini travel machine needs an adapter to work with F&P masks

Finding your size

Size the nasal cushion, not the headgear: the headgear is one size, which F&P says fits all cushion sizes and about 95% of patients. F&P publishes a printable sizing guide (print at actual size on US Letter, check the printed scale with a ruler, cut it out and hold it under your nose), and the F&P myMask app can also size the nasal cushion. The cushion should seal under your nose; your nose should never sit inside the cushion opening.

How to fit it

  1. Remove packaging and check the mask

Take off all packaging. Look over the cushion and frame for cracks or tears, and make sure the exhaust holes on the frame are clear.

  2. Stretch the headgear on

Anchor the grey strap behind your head and pull forward to stretch the headgear over your head.

  3. Position the cushion

Set the cushion under your nose and place the orange (gold) strap on top of your head. Your nose should sit on top of the cushion, not inside the opening.

  4. Connect and turn on

Connect the swivel to your machine's breathing tube and turn the machine on so the cushion inflates at your therapy pressure.

  5. Fine tune with one touch

Pull the cushion away from your nose to loosen the headgear, or push it toward your nose to tighten it. Aim for a seal that feels comfortable, not tight.

Common problems and fixes

Leak under the nose

Lie down with the machine running and reposition the cushion under your nose, then push it in gently to tighten. If leaks continue with a comfortable fit, ask your equipment supplier about a different cushion size (Small, Medium, Large or Wide).

Mask feels too loose or too tight overnight

Use the one-touch adjustment: pull the cushion away to loosen or push it in to tighten. The side straps can also be lengthened or shortened. Do not crank it down, the guide warns over-tightening can deform tissue and cause pressure sores.

Headgear no longer pulls back in

F&P suggests washing headgear that is not retracting in warm soapy water. If it still does not work, the headgear is due for replacement.

Dry mouth or air escaping from the mouth

A nasal mask only works if your mouth stays closed. A chinstrap is a common fix; if that does not help, ask your clinician about a full face mask.

Eye irritation or redness

Air blowing toward the eyes usually means the cushion has shifted. Refit it. F&P says to stop and contact your healthcare provider if eye discomfort continues.

Cleaning and care

After each use, take the headgear off the frame and pull the cushion off the frame. Hand wash the frame, tube, swivel and cushion in soap dissolved in lukewarm water, without soaking longer than 10 minutes, then rinse in fresh water until no soap is left and let everything dry out of direct sunlight.

Wash the headgear the same way after 7 days of use, and do not stretch the headgear while it is wet. F&P says not to use products with alcohol, antiseptic, bleach, chlorine or moisturizer, and not to use a dishwasher. Do not try to remove the swivel or the tube from the frame.

Supplies that can help

CPAP chinstrap

A soft strap that supports the jaw to help keep the mouth closed, used mainly with nasal and nasal pillow masks to reduce mouth leaks.

CPAP mask wipes

Pre-moistened wipes for a quick daily wipe of the mask cushion, mostly to remove skin oils between proper washes.

Mild unscented soap for CPAP cleaning

Plain, mild dish soap is the cleaning agent most CPAP makers and the FDA point to for masks, tubing and humidifier chambers.

Saline nasal spray

Salt water spray that moistens and clears the nose, a simple aid for the congestion and dryness some people get on CPAP.

Frequently asked questions

Does the F&P Solo Nasal have straps to adjust?

Not in the usual way. It uses AutoFit headgear with AutoLock: you stretch it over your head, then push the cushion toward your nose to tighten or pull it away to loosen. The side straps can be lengthened or shortened, but there are no hook and loop tabs or clips.

Can I use Solo Pillows cushions with my Solo Nasal headgear?

Yes. F&P says the AutoFit headgear is interchangeable between the Solo Nasal and Solo Pillows cushions. The cushions are sold separately, so ask your supplier for the Solo Pillows cushion in your size.

What size Solo Nasal cushion do I need?

The nasal cushion comes in Small, Medium, Large and Wide, with one-size headgear. Use F&P's printable sizing guide or the myMask app, and ask your supplier for the S, M, L fit pack if you are unsure.

Does the F&P Solo have magnets?

No. F&P states its masks do not contain magnets, so the 2022 and 2024 FDA magnet warnings that apply to some Philips and ResMed masks do not apply to the Solo.

What pressure can the Solo Nasal handle?

Its instructions give an operating pressure range of 4 to 20 cm H2O. If your prescribed pressure is above that, talk to your clinician about a different mask rather than changing your settings.
