Philips DreamStation Auto BiPAP (and BiPAP Pro)

The DreamStation Auto BiPAP is the bilevel version of the original DreamStation, delivering a higher pressure when you breathe in (IPAP) and a lower one when you breathe out (EPAP), with auto-adjusting bilevel on the Auto model; the BiPAP Pro is the fixed bilevel version in the same manual. It shares the DreamStation's dial-driven display, optional humidifier and heated tube, and adds a patient-adjustable Rise Time. It is part of the June 14, 2021 foam recall, as is the older System One BiPAP Auto.

Recalled

Philips' June 14, 2021 recall covers the DreamStation (CPAP, Auto CPAP, BiPAP) made before April 26, 2021, all serial numbers, because the PE-PUR foam can break down into particles and give off chemicals; the FDA classified the recall as Class I in July 2021. In August 2021 the FDA concurred with Philips' repair and replacement plan for DreamStation devices including DreamStation BiPAP Pro and Auto. The older System One BiPAP Auto falls under the recalled SystemOne line, and Philips' 2022 bulletin says System One 50 and 60 series units cannot be repaired, offering a payment ($25 per 50 series device, $50 per 60 series device) or a replacement with a current prescription. The April 9, 2024 consent decree requires a Recall Remediation Plan with a new or reworked device or, for some devices, a partial refund. The FDA advises talking to your health care provider before stopping or continuing, registering with Philips (877-907-7508), not adding a filter, not removing the foam and not using ozone or UV cleaners.

  • Not sold new in the US; Philips stopped selling new BiPAP devices in the US in 2021

Comfort settings you can change

These are in the patient menu. Your prescribed pressure and therapy mode are set by your clinician and are not covered here.

Ramp and Ramp Time

Starts at a lower pressure and rises to your prescribed pressures over the ramp time.

How to change it: Therapy off: My Setup, then Ramp (0.5 cm H2O steps) or Ramp Time. During therapy, press the Ramp button on top.

Flex

Extra exhale pressure relief. Level 1 is mild, higher numbers give more.

How to change it: My Setup, then Flex, 1 to 3. A lock icon means your provider locked it.

Rise Time

Sets how quickly pressure moves from the exhale pressure up to the inhale pressure when you start to breathe in.

How to change it: My Setup, then Rise Time. A lock icon means your provider locked it.

Humidification mode

Fixed or Adaptive humidification; locks to Heated Tube mode when a heated tube is attached.

How to change it: My Setup, then Humidification.

Humidifier and tube temperature

Moisture level and heated tube warmth, 0 to 5.

How to change it: Only during therapy: turn the dial to the setting, press and turn to adjust.

Mask Type

Matches pressure compensation to your Philips mask's System One resistance setting.

How to change it: My Setup, then Mask Type.

Tube Type

Matches the machine to 22, 15 or 12 mm tubing; sets itself with a heated tube.

How to change it: My Setup, then Tube Type.

Check Mask Fit

Runs a 40 second leak test.

How to change it: Mask on, My Setup, then Check Mask Fit, press the dial.

Cleaning and care

  1. Weekly: device exterior

Unplug, wipe the outside with a lint-free cloth dampened with mild dish soap solution, wipe again with plain water and let it dry completely.

  2. Monthly: blue pollen filter

Rinse the reusable blue pollen filter monthly under normal home use and replace it every six months. Let it dry completely before reinstalling.

  3. Every 30 days: ultra-fine filter

Replace the light blue ultra-fine filter every 30 days or sooner if dirty. Do not rinse it.

  4. Tubing and humidifier

Wash standard tubing in warm water with mild dish soap, rinse and air dry. Clean the heated tube and humidifier chamber following the DreamStation humidifier manual.

  5. No ozone cleaners

The DreamStation BiPAP manual warns to use only the cleaning methods it lists and that ozone-based cleaning and disinfection is not approved. The FDA says ozone may worsen PE-PUR foam breakdown in recalled devices.

Replacement parts

Tubing
22 or 15 mm standard tubing, 12 mm tubing with adapter, or DreamStation heated tubing (15H).
Filters
Blue reusable pollen filter (rinse monthly, replace every six months) and light blue disposable ultra-fine filter (replace every 30 days).
Water chamber
DreamStation heated humidifier water chamber.
Replacement notes
Philips can still sell accessories and replacement parts for devices in use in the US. Expected device service life is 5 years per the manual.

Troubleshooting

Black particles in the tubing or mask

That matches the recall's foam breakdown. Contact your clinician about your therapy plan, register with Philips and report it through FDA MedWatch.

Breathing in feels too abrupt or too slow

Try a different Rise Time in My Setup if it is not locked. If it still feels wrong, tell your clinician; IPAP and EPAP pressures themselves are prescription settings.

Pressure feels too high or too low

Check that Tube Type matches your hose. Pressure changes come only from your clinician.

Ramp does not work

Ramp may not be enabled, ramp time may be 0, or your starting pressure may already equal your therapy pressure.

Heated tube is cold

Make sure you are using the 80 W power supply or a compatible battery or DC cable.

Water runs out before morning

Fill to the max line, fix mask leaks, and consider lower settings or Adaptive humidification.

Travel and power

The DreamStation BiPAP manual says the device is suitable for airline use on AC or DC power, but not with a modem or humidifier installed, and it conforms to RTCA/DO-160G section 21, category M. It accepts 100 to 240 VAC, and a Philips DC cord (12 VDC, 6.67 A) runs it from a stationary RV, boat or a 12 VDC battery with the Philips battery adapter cable; do not run it from a vehicle battery with the engine on. Keep it in carry-on and empty the humidifier before travel. As a recalled device, discuss travel plans with your clinician.

Your sleep data

The DreamStation BiPAP has built-in Bluetooth for DreamMapper and optional modem or Wi-Fi uploads to your provider. My Info can show therapy hours, AHI, mask fit, periodic breathing and, on the BiPAP Auto, 90% IPAP and 90% EPAP pressure over 1, 7 and 30 days. The SD card on the side holds detailed data, and OSCAR's Philips loader lists DreamStation BiPAP Pro and Auto BiPAP models (and System One BiPAP Auto models 750P, 760P and 761P). Any change to your pressures goes through your clinician.

Supplies that can help

Replacement CPAP air filters

The air inlet filter keeps dust and lint out of the machine and your airway; it is a cheap part that needs regular replacement.

Standard (unheated) CPAP tubing

The plain hose between the machine and the mask; it wears out and should be replaced on a regular schedule.

Mild unscented soap for CPAP cleaning

Plain, mild dish soap is the cleaning agent most CPAP makers and the FDA point to for masks, tubing and humidifier chambers.

Frequently asked questions

Is the DreamStation BiPAP Auto recalled?

Yes. Philips' June 14, 2021 recall lists DreamStation (CPAP, Auto CPAP, BiPAP) units made before April 26, 2021, and the FDA's August 2021 concurrence with Philips' repair plan named DreamStation BiPAP Pro and Auto. Check your serial number with Philips at 877-907-7508 or on its recall site.

What about the older System One BiPAP Auto?

System One machines are also in the recall. Philips says it cannot offer a new or repaired System One; registered owners choose between a payment ($25 per 50 series, $50 per 60 series device) or a replacement that needs a current prescription.

What does Rise Time do on a BiPAP?

Rise Time is how long the machine takes to go from your exhale pressure (EPAP) to your inhale pressure (IPAP). You can adjust it in My Setup unless your provider locked it, but the pressures themselves are part of your prescription.

Should I stop using my recalled BiPAP?

The FDA says to talk with your health care provider first, because stopping can carry more risk than continuing for some patients. Do not add a filter, do not try to remove the foam and do not use ozone or UV cleaners.
