Philips DreamStation Auto BiPAP (and BiPAP Pro)
How to set up the Philips DreamStation Auto BiPAP (and BiPAP Pro)
From the box to your first night. Keep the user guide that came with your machine nearby: if anything here differs from it, follow the guide.
Check recall status and talk to your clinician
Look up the serial number on Philips' recall site or call 877-907-7508. Bilevel users often have more complex needs, so talk with your prescribing clinician before stopping, switching or continuing this machine.
Install filters
Lift the side filter door, snap the blue reusable pollen filter onto a light blue ultra-fine filter if you use one, slide them in and close the door.
Place the machine
Firm, flat surface, lower than your bed, filter area clear, not on carpet or fabric and not near vents or heaters.
Attach humidifier
If you have the DreamStation heated humidifier, attach and fill it following its manual. It must sit level and below the mask connection.
Connect power
Plug the AC cord into the power supply and an outlet not on a wall switch, then the power supply into the side of the machine.
Connect tubing and mask
Attach heated or standard tubing to the air outlet on the back, set Tube Type to match, and connect your mask and headgear.
Start therapy
Put on the mask and press the Therapy button on top. Your inhale and exhale pressures are set by your provider from your prescription.
After setup: settings worth knowing
- Ramp and Ramp Time: Starts at a lower pressure and rises to your prescribed pressures over the ramp time.
- Flex: Extra exhale pressure relief. Level 1 is mild, higher numbers give more.
- Rise Time: Sets how quickly pressure moves from the exhale pressure up to the inhale pressure when you start to breathe in.
- Humidification mode: Fixed or Adaptive humidification; locks to Heated Tube mode when a heated tube is attached.
- Humidifier and tube temperature: Moisture level and heated tube warmth, 0 to 5.
- Mask Type: Matches pressure compensation to your Philips mask's System One resistance setting.
- Tube Type: Matches the machine to 22, 15 or 12 mm tubing; sets itself with a heated tube.
- Check Mask Fit: Runs a 40 second leak test.
Supplies that can help
The air inlet filter keeps dust and lint out of the machine and your airway; it is a cheap part that needs regular replacement.
The plain hose between the machine and the mask; it wears out and should be replaced on a regular schedule.
Plain, mild dish soap is the cleaning agent most CPAP makers and the FDA point to for masks, tubing and humidifier chambers.
