Fisher & Paykel Healthcare · Auto CPAP (APAP)
Fisher & Paykel ICON series (ICON and ICON+ Auto, Premo, Novo)
The ICON is Fisher & Paykel's bedside CPAP with the humidifier and power supply built in, a front clock with an alarm, and a SmartDial you press, turn and press to work the menus. The Auto adjusts pressure automatically and has SensAwake; the Premo is fixed pressure with efficacy reporting; the Novo is basic fixed CPAP with compliance reporting, all within 4 to 20 cm H2O. ThermoSmart heated tubing and a USB stick (SmartStick, later called InfoUSB) handle humidity and data.
Fisher & Paykel previewed the ICON range at the SLEEP conference in June 2010. The ICON+ (Auto, Premo, Novo) is still listed on Fisher & Paykel's Australian and Canadian websites, but its US CPAP devices page does not list any ICON model and we found no US ICON product page (checked October 2026). We did not find a dated Fisher & Paykel notice announcing its US discontinuation, so treat this as no longer offered in the US rather than a formal recall or withdrawal.

Comfort settings you can change
These are in the patient menu. Your prescribed pressure and therapy mode are set by your clinician and are not covered here.
Ramp
Starts at a lower pressure and rises to your prescribed pressure to help you fall asleep (Proportional Ramp on all models).
How to change it: After a quick press of the SmartDial starts therapy, press the SmartDial again and hold for 3 seconds until the Ramp symbol appears.
Humidity
Sets the humidifier from 0 (off) to 7 (maximum). The default is 4.
How to change it: Turn the SmartDial to Humidity (in Advanced Mode, press to enter), turn to the level you want and press to accept. Use 0 if you run without water or need low power. Humidity cannot be changed while Flight Mode is on.
Humidity Boost
Adds three fine-tuning levels on top of the humidity setting: low (1), medium (2, the default) or high (3).
How to change it: While in the Humidity setting, press and hold the SmartDial for 3 seconds until the Boost symbols appear, turn to choose, and press to accept. Fisher & Paykel says to use Boost only in extreme situations when you have symptoms from therapy; medium suits most people.
SensAwake On/Off
On the ICON Auto, lowers pressure when it senses you waking so you can fall back asleep more easily.
How to change it: Turn the SmartDial to the SensAwake setting, press, turn to On or Off and press to accept. Your provider may have restricted this setting.
Flight Mode
Runs the machine on reduced power (75 W) for situations like long flights or camping. Humidity output drops sharply and it is not meant for long-term use.
How to change it: Turn the SmartDial to User Preferences, press, go to Flight Mode, press, turn to On or Off and press to accept. A Flight Mode symbol stays on the Home Screen while it is on.
Display Pressure
Shows either the time (default) or the current pressure on the Home Screen, in cm H2O or hPa.
How to change it: In User Preferences, turn to Display Pressure, press, turn to On or Off and press to accept. To change units, press and hold the SmartDial for 3 seconds and choose cm H2O or hPa.
Alarm, AlarmTunes, clock and brightness
The ICON doubles as a bedside alarm clock, with a bell or music alarm, adjustable volume and adjustable screen brightness.
How to change it: In Advanced Mode, turn the SmartDial to Alarm, Alarm Time, Alarm Volume, Clock Time or Brightness, press to enter, turn to adjust and press to accept. AlarmTunes needs songs loaded onto the InfoUSB with F&P Studio software. Advanced Mode may be restricted by your provider.
Cleaning and care
Every day: water chamber, lid and tube
Twist the Chamber Lid counterclockwise to remove it, wash it in mild dishwashing detergent, rinse and dry. Disconnect the tube from the mask and elbow, wash it in warm soapy water, rinse it and hang it with both ends pointing to the floor.
Remove the water chamber and pour out any water. Wash it in a home dishwasher or by hand with mild detergent, then rinse and dry. Do not remove the rubber seal or try to take the chamber apart.
Every week: vinegar soak, outlet seal and elbow
Soak the inside of the water chamber for 10 minutes in 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water, then empty it and rinse thoroughly.
Disconnect the elbow, then push the outlet seal lightly from the back of the machine into the chamber housing to remove it. Wash both in mild detergent, rinse and dry. When refitting, put the outlet seal in before the elbow.
The outside of the machine
Turn off the wall outlet before unplugging. With the water chamber out, wipe the outside and the basin with a clean, damp (not wet) cloth and mild dishwashing detergent. Do not use harsh abrasives, solvents or alcohol.
Air filter
The filter sits behind the Filter Grill on the back. Pull out the grill, pinch the filter to remove it, fit a new one with the black stripe facing in, and push the grill back.
Replace it when it is noticeably discolored, at least every three months, or after 1,000 hours of running time.
Inspect parts
Check the machine, tube and water chamber after cleaning. Replace any part right away if you see cracks, discoloration or leaks.
Replacement parts
- Tubing
- ThermoSmart breathing tube 900ICON208 or standard breathing tube 900HC221 (22 mm conical connector). Elbow 900ICON204; oxygen elbow 900ICON205.
- Filters
- ICON air filter 900ICON503 (single) or 900ICON213 (2-pack), held in by the Filter Grill 900ICON218. Replace at least every three months or 1,000 hours.
- Water chamber
- One-piece ICON water chamber, 420 mL to the maximum line (listed as 900ICON200, a 10-pack, in the manual). Outlet seal 900ICON206.
- Replacement notes
- Chamber Lids came in silver gloss (900ICON214), matte gray (900ICON216) and charcoal (900ICON217); InfoUSB sticks are 900ICON202 (5-pack). Part numbers are from Fisher & Paykel's ICON Use and Care Manual; because the ICON is not offered on F&P's US site, confirm availability with your equipment provider.
Troubleshooting
I cannot turn the pressure on or off
You are probably in Advanced Mode with the selection away from 12 o'clock. Turn the selection circle to the 12 o'clock position and press the SmartDial.
Not enough air is coming out
The Chamber Lid is probably not locked. Lift it off, line up the dots again and turn clockwise until it sits flush, and make sure the water chamber is in the machine.
There is a hissing noise from the machine
Air is leaking past the Chamber Lid. Remove it and refit it so it is completely flush with the top.
I think the water chamber is leaking because there is water on the heater plate
This is usually condensation that forms as the machine cools after therapy. Remove the chamber and dry the basin with a cloth before each use. If the water build-up becomes excessive, contact your provider.
The heater plate or chamber base is warm when the machine is not in use
This is normal. The power supply sits under the heater plate and uses about 5 W in standby. Unplug it when not in use if this worries you.
I do not think the humidifier is working
Check that the humidity setting is above 1 and that the water chamber is not empty. Make sure Flight Mode is off, since it sharply reduces humidity.
The alarm music does not play
Check the alarm is On and set to AlarmTunes rather than the bell, the volume is loud enough, F&P Studio software has loaded songs onto the InfoUSB, and the InfoUSB is pushed fully into the port.
The InfoUSB symbol keeps flashing
Pull the InfoUSB completely out and push it back in until it clicks.
Travel and power
The ICON's built-in power supply is rated for 100 to 115 V (50 to 60 Hz, or 400 Hz) and 220 to 240 V (50 to 60 Hz), so it can run abroad with a plug adapter. Its Use and Care Manual does not include an FAA compliance statement; Fisher & Paykel tells you to confirm ICON approval with your airline before you plan to use it in flight. Empty the water chamber before traveling, and do not carry or store the machine with water in it.
Flight Mode limits the machine to 75 W for long flights, camping or battery use, but humidity drops sharply in this mode and humidity cannot be adjusted while it is on. The manual does not describe a DC input, so off-grid use means an inverter or an AC portable power station; check its rating with your supplier. At 4.8 lb it is heavy for a travel machine.
Your sleep data
The ICON shows basic sleep data on its screen: in Simple Mode, press and hold the SmartDial for 7 seconds to see total compliant hours, average hours over 30, 7 and 1 nights, and the percentage of nights over 4 hours. In Advanced Mode, the Sleep Data menu adds AHI, leak, 90th percentile pressure and SensAwake counts for the Auto, plus a CMS compliance report on US models.
The USB port holds the InfoUSB (called SmartStick on early units), which records up to 365 days of summary efficacy data, 7 days of detailed data and pressure and leak data. When your provider asks, you can run the InfoUSB application on a computer to upload data, or mail the stick; settings changes your provider puts on it load automatically when you plug it back in. The ICON has no Bluetooth or app. OSCAR includes a Fisher & Paykel ICON loader that reads the FPHCARE folder on the stick, so you can view a copy of your data. Only use the F&P ICON InfoUSB in the machine.
Supplies that can help
Distilled water is what most CPAP humidifier chambers are meant to be filled with, because it leaves little or no mineral scale behind.
The air inlet filter keeps dust and lint out of the machine and your airway; it is a cheap part that needs regular replacement.
Plain, mild dish soap is the cleaning agent most CPAP makers and the FDA point to for masks, tubing and humidifier chambers.
A simple hook or hanger for drying CPAP tubing vertically after washing, and for keeping it off the floor.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the ICON Auto, Premo and Novo?
The Auto adjusts pressure automatically and has SensAwake, leak compensation and full efficacy reporting. The Premo is fixed pressure with efficacy reporting; Fisher & Paykel's ICON+ chart lists SensAwake on the Premo too, while the original ICON chart listed it on the Auto only. The Novo is a basic fixed CPAP with compliance reporting only and manual altitude adjustment.
Why is my ICON blowing weak air or hissing?
The most common cause is a Chamber Lid that is not locked flat. Lift it off, line up the large dots, press down and turn clockwise until it sits flush, and make sure the water chamber is in place.
What does 'Error' on my ICON screen mean?
The machine has detected a fault. Unplug it, plug it back in and restart. If the error returns, write down the number shown and call your healthcare provider; the manual does not publish a patient list of what each number means.
How do I turn on Ramp on the ICON?
Start therapy with a quick press of the SmartDial, then press and hold it for 3 seconds until the Ramp symbol appears. You can do this in both Simple and Advanced Mode.
Can I use the ICON on a plane or with a battery?
The manual says to confirm ICON approval with your airline before using it in flight. Flight Mode cuts power to 75 W for flights, camping or battery use, at the cost of much less humidity. There is no DC input described, so batteries need an inverter.
Can OSCAR read Fisher & Paykel ICON data?
Yes. OSCAR has an ICON loader that reads the FPHCARE data on the InfoUSB or SmartStick. Copy the stick on your computer, then put it back in the machine until it clicks so recording continues.
