ResMed AirTouch F20
The AirFit F20 full face mask with an UltraSoft memory foam cushion in place of silicone. The foam cushion is not washed: ResMed says it is replaced regularly instead and only wiped dry. AirTouch F20 for Her is the same mask with lavender accents in Small and Medium.
The AirTouch F20 (and AirTouch F20 for Her) has magnetic headgear clips. Under ResMed's updated labeling (announced December 20, 2023) and the FDA's January 18, 2024 safety communication, which the FDA classed as a Class I recall (a correction, not a removal from the market), the mask is contraindicated if you, or anyone in close physical contact with you while the mask is in use, has an active medical implant that interacts with magnets (such as a pacemaker, implantable cardioverter defibrillator, neurostimulator, cerebrospinal fluid shunt, or insulin or infusion pump) or a metallic implant or object containing ferromagnetic material (such as aneurysm clips, embolic coils, stents, valves, electrodes, certain hearing or balance implants, ocular implants, or metallic splinters in the eye). Keep the mask magnets at least 6 inches (150 mm) away from any implant or medical device that may be affected by magnetic interference. If this applies to you or a bed partner, stop using the mask and ask your clinician or mask provider for a mask without magnets.
Usually suits
- Mouth breathers with sensitive skin
- People who get red marks from silicone
- People with facial hair who need a full face mask
Design
- UltraSoft memory foam cushion instead of silicone
- Cushion is not washed; ResMed says it is hygienic for one month without cleaning when replaced on schedule
- Magnetic clips on the lower headgear straps
- Quick-release elbow
- QuietAir vent, rated by ResMed at 21 dBA
- Shares frame and headgear with the AirFit F20
Strengths and trade-offs
- Foam cushion is an option if silicone irritates your skin or leaves marks
- Less daily cleaning, because the foam cushion is not washed
- Same fit range and parts as the widely used AirFit F20
- Contains magnets, with the same implant contraindication as the AirFit F20
- The foam cushion must never get wet, and it wears out faster, so it is replaced more often (ResMed's tip sheet says every 2 weeks)
- Insurance may only cover a cushion once a month, so extra cushions can be out of pocket
- Covers the bridge of the nose like other traditional full face masks
Finding your size
Uses the same sizing as the AirFit F20 (Small, Medium, Large; For Her in Small and Medium). The foam cushion should rest just above the bridge of your nose and just under your lower lip with your mouth closed. Your supplier can size you with ResMed's fitting template; if you already wear an F20, the same size is the usual starting point.
How to fit it
Release the clips
Twist and pull both magnetic clips off the frame.
Place the mask
With the headgear logo facing out and upright, hold the foam cushion against your face and pull the headgear over your head.
Clip the lower straps
Bring the lower straps under your ears and snap the clips onto the frame.
Adjust evenly
Adjust the upper straps first, then the lower ones, pulling each pair evenly. Foam seals with light contact, so you usually need less strap tension than with silicone.
Check with air on
Connect the tube, turn the machine on and lie in your usual sleeping position. Small adjustments are better than pulling the straps hard.
Common problems and fixes
Cushion feels flat or leaks more than when new
Foam cushions wear out. Check how long you have had it and replace it on schedule. Do not wash it to try to revive it, because water damages the foam.
Cushion got wet
ResMed says the foam cushion should never get wet. Replace it rather than drying and reusing it.
Air leaking toward the eyes
Tighten the upper straps slightly and evenly, and ask your supplier to check the size.
Discoloration after using a sanitizer
ResMed says ozone can discolor its masks and reduce the AirTouch seal, and that is not covered by its warranty. Clean the frame and elbow with soap and water only.
Cleaning and care
Wash the elbow and frame every day in warm (about 86°F/30°C) drinking-quality water with mild or hypoallergenic soap, rinse well and air dry on a towel out of direct sunlight. Wash the headgear weekly. Do not wash the UltraSoft foam cushion: you may wipe it with a dry cloth or a non-alcohol wipe, but never get it wet, and replace it on schedule.
How often to replace parts
- Mask
- Up to 1 complete mask every 3 months (Medicare A7030)
- Cushion
- Up to 1 per month (Medicare A7031); ResMed's own tip sheet suggests replacing the foam cushion every 2 weeks, so ask your plan what it covers
- Headgear
- Up to 1 every 6 months (Medicare A7035)
Supplies that can help
Pre-moistened wipes for a quick daily wipe of the mask cushion, mostly to remove skin oils between proper washes.
Plain, mild dish soap is the cleaning agent most CPAP makers and the FDA point to for masks, tubing and humidifier chambers.
Soft fabric sleeves that wrap mask headgear straps to stop red lines, rubbing and hair tangles.
A pillow with cutouts or a contoured edge so a mask and hose are not pushed out of place when you sleep on your side.
