Fisher & Paykel SleepStyle (Auto and CPAP)
How to set up the Fisher & Paykel SleepStyle (Auto and CPAP)
From the box to your first night. Keep the user guide that came with your machine nearby: if anything here differs from it, follow the guide.
Check the box
You should have the SleepStyle, a breathing tube, power cord, water chamber, chamber seal, outlet seal, the InfoUSB (already in its port), an air filter (already fitted), a spare filter, a spare elbow, a carry bag and the guides.
Your healthcare provider has to set the machine up before first use, so it should arrive with your prescription already loaded.
Place it below head height
Put the SleepStyle on a stable, level surface such as a bedside table, lower than your head. This keeps water from running into the tube, and keeps the machine from falling on you.
Plug in the power cord and tube
Connect the power cord to the back of the machine and to the wall. Push the breathing tube into the air outlet; with a ThermoSmart tube, make sure the connectors click into the ThermoSmart connection. The ThermoSmart icon on the home screen tells you it is connected.
Use the elbow, not the tube itself, when you rotate a ThermoSmart tube.
Fill the water chamber outside the machine
Press the lid latch, open the lid and lift out the water chamber. Peel back the chamber seal and fill with water to the maximum line marked on the side and inside. Use distilled water to reduce residue, and never use hot water.
Fold the chamber seal back down and press the finger holds so it seals. Never fill the chamber while it is in the machine, and never pour water into the chamber housing.
Put the chamber back and close the lid
Set the water chamber back in the machine and push the lid down until the latch clicks. A lid that is not closed properly, a missing chamber seal or a missing outlet seal can cause weak or fluctuating pressure.
Connect your mask
Hold the mask and the free end of the tube, and push the mask swivel firmly into the tube. Fit the mask using its own instructions.
Pair the SleepStyle app (optional)
Install the SleepStyle app, register an account, then unplug the machine and plug it back in so the screen shows F&P SleepStyle. In the app tap to search for your CPAP, choose SleepStyle followed by the last four digits of your serial number, confirm the 6-digit pairing code, then enter the 4-digit PIN shown on the machine's screen.
App availability varies by country, and the app syncs each time you press Stop.
Start your first night
Put the mask on and press Start/Stop. To use Ramp, press and hold Start/Stop for 3 seconds until the Ramp symbol appears.
When you stop, leave the machine plugged in and switched on at the wall; Fisher & Paykel says this reduces condensation. Empty and refill the water before each night.
After setup: settings worth knowing
- Ramp: Raises the pressure gradually to your prescribed level over a 20-minute period.
- Humidity: Sets how much moisture the heated humidifier adds, from 0 (off) to 7 (most). The default is 5.
- Expiratory relief: Lowers the pressure when you breathe out and returns to your prescribed pressure when you breathe in. Off is 0, Low 1, Medium 2 and High 3 cm H2O of relief.
- SensAwake: Detects when you are waking during the night and lowers the pressure to help you get back to sleep.
- Bluetooth: Turns the Bluetooth link to the SleepStyle app on or off. Turning it on also makes the machine discoverable for 15 minutes.
- Cellular modem (some models): Sends your therapy data automatically to your healthcare provider. If you turn it off, it turns itself back on after 3 days.
Supplies that can help
Distilled water is what most CPAP humidifier chambers are meant to be filled with, because it leaves little or no mineral scale behind.
The air inlet filter keeps dust and lint out of the machine and your airway; it is a cheap part that needs regular replacement.
Plain, mild dish soap is the cleaning agent most CPAP makers and the FDA point to for masks, tubing and humidifier chambers.
A long, flexible brush sized to reach the full length of CPAP tubing so you can scrub the inside, not just soak it.
A simple hook or hanger for drying CPAP tubing vertically after washing, and for keeping it off the floor.
