Buying CPAP Supplies Online: Which Items Need a Prescription
In the US, CPAP machines and masks are prescription devices, so online sellers will ask for your prescription before selling a machine or mask. Many accessories like filters, cleaning supplies, hose covers and pillows are sold without one, and policies for cushions and tubing vary by seller.
Why masks need a prescription
Masks are regulated as part of the PAP system. The FDA 510(k) summary for the ResMed AirFit N20 nasal mask, for example, states that it is a prescription device. US machine manuals carry the caution that federal law restricts the device to use by or on the order of a physician.
Retailers verify prescriptions in different ways: uploading a copy, contacting your clinician, or keeping one on file.
Usually sold without a prescription
Items that are not regulated as part of the breathing system are usually sold freely: mask wipes, unscented soap, hose brushes, tubing covers, hose hangers, CPAP pillows, mask liners and strap covers, travel cases and some batteries.
Replacement filters and water chambers are often sold without a prescription too, but seller policies differ.
Gray areas
Cushions, nasal pillows, headgear and tubing are handled differently by different retailers. Some require a prescription for any part that touches the airflow; others do not for parts of a mask you already own.
If a site sells new machines or complete masks with no prescription at all, be cautious about where the products came from.
Buying safely online
Match exact model and size: cushions and headgear are specific to mask models and sizes. Check that the seller is authorized by the manufacturer, read the return policy for opened masks, and keep receipts for HSA or FSA claims.
If you use insurance, buying out of pocket may not count toward your deductible. Ask first.
Supplies that can help
The air inlet filter keeps dust and lint out of the machine and your airway; it is a cheap part that needs regular replacement.
Pre-moistened wipes for a quick daily wipe of the mask cushion, mostly to remove skin oils between proper washes.
Soft fabric liners that sit between your skin and the mask cushion to reduce skin irritation, red marks and the noisy leaks some people get from …
A fabric sleeve that slips over CPAP tubing to insulate it, reduce condensation and make the hose feel softer against your skin.
A long, flexible brush sized to reach the full length of CPAP tubing so you can scrub the inside, not just soak it.
