CPAP Resupply Programs: How Automatic Refills Work

Resupply programs from DME suppliers send you replacement masks, cushions, tubing and filters on your insurer's schedule. Under Medicare rules, suppliers must contact you no sooner than 30 days before your supply runs out, get your confirmation, and cannot ship automatically.

How resupply works

Your supplier tracks when you last received each item and when your insurance will pay for the next one. Near that date, they contact you by phone, text, email or an app to confirm what you need.

You confirm items and quantities, the supplier bills insurance, and items arrive. You can decline anything you do not need.

Medicare's rules

CMS policy L33718 (revision effective January 1, 2024) says suppliers may contact you no sooner than 30 calendar days before the expected end of your current supply, must document your affirmative response before dispensing, and must not auto ship. Delivery may be no sooner than 10 calendar days before the current supply runs out.

The prior contact window was 14 days; the current policy replaced it with 30 days.

Making it work for you

Answer only for what you actually need. Stockpiling unused cushions wastes your share of the cost and can mean you get the wrong size when your needs change.

If you want a different mask style or size, tell the supplier; a new order from your clinician may be needed when the type of supply changes.

Private insurance programs

Many private plans follow schedules close to Medicare's, but contact rules and coverage differ. Ask your supplier what your plan allows and how they contact you.

If you are billed for items you did not confirm, call the supplier and your insurer.

Frequently asked questions

Is CPAP resupply automatic?

Under Medicare, no: suppliers must contact you and get your confirmation each time, and auto shipping is not allowed. Private programs vary.

How often can I get new CPAP supplies through insurance?

On your plan's schedule, often matching Medicare's usual maximums such as a mask every 3 months and cushions monthly or twice monthly.

Can I stop CPAP resupply calls?

Yes. Tell your supplier you want to opt out or change how they contact you.

What if I need supplies sooner than the schedule?

Ask your supplier. A damaged item may be replaceable, but extra quantities usually need documentation from your clinician.
