Philips Respironics System One REMstar 60 Series

How to set up the Philips Respironics System One REMstar 60 Series

From the box to your first night. Keep the user guide that came with your machine nearby: if anything here differs from it, follow the guide.

  1. Talk to your clinician and register

This machine is recalled and past the age Philips will repair. Before relying on it, talk to your prescribing clinician about your options and register the serial number with Philips (877-907-7508) so you can choose a replacement or the payment Philips offers.

  2. Install the filters

If you use the white disposable ultra-fine filter, put it in the filter area first, mesh side facing the device, then put the grey foam filter in behind it. The grey filter must always be in place.

  3. Place the machine

Put it on a firm, flat surface lower than your sleeping position, with the filter area on the back clear of bedding and curtains. Keep it off carpet and fabric and away from vents and heaters. If it has been in a very hot or cold place, let it reach room temperature first.

  4. Connect power

Plug the AC cord into the power supply and the outlet, then plug the power supply into the back of the device. The device turns on as soon as it gets power. Use the 80 W supply if you have a heated tube.

  5. Attach humidifier and tubing

If you use a humidifier, remove the side cover and attach it following the humidifier manual. Connect a heated tube only to the humidifier outlet, never the device outlet. Standard 15 or 22 mm tubing connects to the air outlet, and you set Tubing type to match.

  6. Start therapy

Put on your mask, turn the wheel to highlight Therapy and press it. Adjust the mask if air leaks into your eyes. Press the wheel again to stop.

  7. Use ramp if prescribed

With airflow on, press the Ramp button on top to lower pressure while you fall asleep. With airflow off, the same button starts the Mask Fit Check if your provider enabled it.

After setup: settings worth knowing

  • Ramp time and Ramp start: Ramp time sets how long pressure takes to climb (0 to 45 minutes). Ramp start sets the starting pressure.
  • Flex: Exhale pressure relief (C-Flex, C-Flex+ or A-Flex, chosen by your provider). Level 1 is mild, higher is more relief.
  • System One humidification: Keeps mask humidity steady by adjusting for room temperature and humidity. Off uses classic heated humidification (shown as C1 to C5).
  • Humidifier, Humidity level and Tube temperature: Humidifier sets 0 to 5 without a heated tube. With a heated tube, Humidity level (1 to 3) and Tube temperature (0 to 5) control moisture and hose warmth; tube temperature 0 turns both off.
  • SYSTEM ONE resistance: Matches pressure compensation to your Philips mask's resistance number (X1 to X5).
  • Tubing type: Tells the device whether you use 22 or 15 mm tubing; it sets 15H automatically with a heated tube.
  • Auto on and Auto off: Starts airflow when you put on the mask and stops it when you take it off.
  • Mask alert: Shows a message and beeps when a large mask leak or disconnection is detected.
  • Humidifier preheat: Warms the water for up to 30 minutes before therapy.

Supplies that can help

Replacement CPAP air filters

The air inlet filter keeps dust and lint out of the machine and your airway; it is a cheap part that needs regular replacement.

Mild unscented soap for CPAP cleaning

Plain, mild dish soap is the cleaning agent most CPAP makers and the FDA point to for masks, tubing and humidifier chambers.
