Insurance, Medicare and cost

Can You Use an HSA or FSA for a CPAP?

Generally yes. IRS Publication 502 says medical expenses include the costs of equipment, supplies and diagnostic devices needed to diagnose or treat disease, which is how HSA and FSA administrators normally treat a prescribed CPAP and its supplies. Keep your receipt and prescription, and check with your plan administrator for items like travel batteries.

What the IRS says

IRS Publication 502 (the 2025 edition, used for 2025 returns) defines medical expenses as the costs of diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease, and says they include the costs of equipment, supplies and diagnostic devices needed for these purposes.

The publication does not list CPAP by name, but a prescribed CPAP treating diagnosed sleep apnea fits that definition. HSA and FSA rules use the same definition of qualified medical expenses.

Usually eligible

The CPAP, APAP or bilevel machine, humidifier and water chambers, masks, cushions and headgear, standard and heated tubing, filters, and a home sleep test or sleep study when ordered by a clinician.

Most administrators also accept travel CPAP machines bought for a diagnosed condition.

May need extra documentation

Items that have both medical and general use, such as batteries, power stations, special pillows, or cleaning products, can be questioned. Your administrator may ask for a letter of medical necessity from your clinician.

Consumer gadgets like general sleep trackers are unlikely to qualify.

Records to keep

Keep an itemized receipt showing what you bought, the date and amount, plus a copy of your prescription. If you pay with a regular card and reimburse yourself later from an HSA, keep the receipt with your tax records.

Rules and administrators differ. When in doubt, ask before you buy.

Supplies that can help

CPAP battery

A battery pack that runs a CPAP machine without mains power, for camping, power outages or long flights.

Replacement CPAP air filters

The air inlet filter keeps dust and lint out of the machine and your airway; it is a cheap part that needs regular replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CPAP machine HSA eligible?

A prescribed CPAP for diagnosed sleep apnea fits the IRS definition of a medical expense in Publication 502, so it is normally HSA and FSA eligible. Confirm with your administrator.

Are CPAP supplies FSA eligible?

Masks, cushions, tubing, filters and water chambers needed for your therapy are generally treated as eligible medical supplies. Keep itemized receipts.

Can I use my HSA for a CPAP battery?

Possibly. A battery used to run a prescribed CPAP may qualify, but administrators may ask for a letter of medical necessity because batteries also have general uses.

Do I need a prescription to use HSA funds for CPAP?

You need a prescription to buy the CPAP in the first place, and keeping it with your receipt is the best way to support an HSA or FSA claim.
