Nasal bridge cushion pads
Thin gel or foam pads that stick to the bridge of the nose, where many masks press hardest, to prevent red marks and sores.
Why it helps
A nasal or full face mask that rests on the bridge of the nose can leave red marks, and over weeks those can become sores. A thin pad spreads the pressure. MedlinePlus lists redness and sores over the bridge of the nose as a common problem when starting PAP.
How to choose
Choose a thin, skin safe gel or foam pad that is easy to remove. Thicker is not better, because a thick pad can lift the cushion and cause leaks. Many marks come from overtightened headgear, so loosen the straps to the point where the mask just seals before adding padding. A mask style that does not touch the nose bridge, such as nasal pillows, a nasal cradle or an under-nose full face mask, is the longer term fix for many people.
If a mark becomes broken skin or an open sore, stop padding over it and see your clinician; skin breakdown is a reason to review your mask type and fit.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my CPAP mask hurt the bridge of my nose?
Usually the headgear is too tight or the mask size or style is wrong for your face. Try loosening the straps until it just seals, check the size with your supplier, or consider a mask that does not touch the bridge.
Can nasal pads cause leaks?
A thick pad can lift the cushion off the skin. Use the thinnest pad that works and run your machine's mask fit check if it has one.
