Flying with a CPAP: Carry-On Rules, FAA Labels and In-Flight Use
You can bring your CPAP on the plane as a carry-on, and medical devices do not count toward your carry-on limit. Under US Department of Transportation rules, CPAP machines that the manufacturer has tested and labeled as meeting FAA requirements may be used in the cabin without further testing by the airline, but you need a power plan because many seats have no suitable outlet.
Carry it on, do not check it
Pack the CPAP in your carry-on so it cannot be lost or crushed in checked baggage. ResMed's AirSense 11 user guide says the device may be taken on board as carry-on luggage and that medical devices do not count toward your carry-on luggage limit.
Empty the water tub before you pack. ResMed warns not to use or transport the device with water in the humidifier tub because water can spill into the machine.
FAA compliance labels
The DOT's 2009 rule on air travel for passengers with disabilities (14 CFR Part 382) lets respiratory assistive devices, including CPAP, be used on board without further testing by the airline if they have been tested for electromagnetic compatibility under RTCA/DO-160, Section 21, Category M.
Manufacturers show this with an engraving or sticker on the device. ResMed's travel compliance letter, dated March 17, 2026, lists AirSense 10, AirSense 11, AirCurve and AirMini models as compliant, and the AirSense 11 guide states it meets FAA requirements for all phases of air travel. Philips marks the DreamStation 2 as approved for airline use. Print your manufacturer's letter and bring it.
Using CPAP during the flight
Contact your airline well before you fly. Airlines can have their own procedures, such as advance notice and power requirements. Ask whether your seat has a power outlet, what kind, and whether you may use it for a medical device.
Many people use a battery on long flights. Turn humidification off and fly with an empty tub, as ResMed directs, and turn on Airplane Mode when airline staff require it. Lithium batteries go in your carry-on, not checked bags, per TSA.
What to pack
Machine, power supply and cord, mask, tubing, empty water tub, spare filter, travel case, a copy of your prescription, the manufacturer's FAA compliance letter, and a battery if you will use it in flight.
Pack the mask and tubing in a clean bag so they stay clean during screening.
Supplies that can help
A padded bag that protects the machine, mask, tubing and power supply in transit.
A battery pack that runs a CPAP machine without mains power, for camping, power outages or long flights.
A heat and moisture exchanger (HME) that captures warmth and moisture from your breath and returns it on the next breath, used mostly with travel CPAPs …
The air inlet filter keeps dust and lint out of the machine and your airway; it is a cheap part that needs regular replacement.

Frequently asked questions
Does a CPAP count as a carry-on bag?
No. ResMed's AirSense 11 guide states that medical devices do not count toward your carry-on luggage limit, consistent with US air travel disability rules. Keep it in its own case.
Can I use my CPAP on the plane?
Yes, if your device is labeled as meeting FAA requirements (RTCA/DO-160 Section 21 Category M) and you have a power source the airline allows. Tell the airline in advance and check their medical device policy.
Do I need a doctor's note to fly with a CPAP?
Not usually for carrying it on. For in-flight use, carry your prescription and the manufacturer's FAA compliance letter, and ask the airline whether they need anything else.
Can I use the humidifier on a plane?
No. ResMed says not to use the device with water in the humidifier tub while in transit because of spill and turbulence risks. Use it dry with humidification off.
Should I pack my CPAP in checked luggage?
Carry it on. Checked bags can be lost or mishandled, and lithium batteries must be in carry-on bags.
